what i've been watching recently
Nov. 3rd, 2025 03:31 pmbeen a while since i actually posted here but i recently watched season 2 of Nobody Wants This and also transferred half my dreamwidth posts into a book on Quotev so i'm feeling very ramble-ready and i've been missing dreamwidth. so here are my thoughts about what i've been watching lately, just because i love a good yap
Nobody Wants This (Season 2)
Practical Magic (1998)
La La Land (2016)
Nobody Wants This (Season 2)
This season kind of just feels like a repeat of last season. Like, it was still relatively enjoyable for the character interactions, but the conflict was still the same and hadn't really progressed much. It even ended the same way; they almost broke up but right at the last second decided they wanted to be together anyway despite everything. Except this time I think Joanne is actually going to convert, so if they do a season 3 finally they'll have some new plot points. Also, I'm glad Noah realised Joanne doesn't need to convert for him to still want to be with her. Obviously, he's going to get his way and she's going to convert and it will make both of their lives easier, but i do think he needed to realise that he was being perhaps a bit too rigid about the conversion side of things.
Also another thing that I noticed and I've seen a few people talk about is the music choices in the show. Its a trend with a lot of shows these days to just have the soundtrack be whatever is trending and sometimes it can be done well but most of the time its just super obvious and out of place. Like "Good Luck Babe" while he's giving a sermon?? It makes no sense and made me roll my eyes. I saw someone talk about how they miss discovering niche songs from TV shows and they're so right. Some of my favourite songs are from random shows where i simply had to shazam the song and ended up adding it to my playlist. If they'd put a bit more effort into the soundtrack instead of hitting shuffle on the "top 100 trending songs" playlist, it would have really elevated the show.

Practical Magic (1998)
I'm definitely a bit late to the 'Practical Magic' party but I got recommended this movie by tiktok as its a sort of Halloween-type movie and honestly, I'm so mad I didn't discover this movie earlier. I'm obsessed. It entered my top 5 movies immediately.
What's not to love about this movie? Witches, sisterhood/girlhood, curses, a fantastic soundtrack. I now yearn to live in a house with only women. I sobbed throughout the whole second half of the movie the first time I watched it (I've watched it two more times since then). It hits all the right chords for me, and while I know its quite a popular movie that appeals to a lot of people, some parts feel very specific to me. Sally Owens reminds me very much of Will Herondale, especially in her letter. I cried when all the women came to help out because I love it when women support each other and I've always wanted a coven.
I will say, the pacing of the movie is very strange at times. I pirated the movie and there were a few times when I thought the site was glitching and had skipped ahead due to how fast things were progressing. I've since learned that it's based off a book, so I imagine that explains the weird pacing. Sometimes movies struggle to get it right and make it feel natural. 'Red, White and Royal Blue' has a similar problem imo, though its less obvious.
Anyway, yeah, I'm obsessed with this movie, I love it so much.

La La Land (2016)
I've been meaning to watch this movie for ages, and a friend recently recommended it to me as their favourite movie so I used it as an excuse to finally get around to watching it.
I'm not sure how to feel about this movie tbh. I wanted to love it. It's right up my alley; its about following your dreams, music is a huge theme in it, its a love story. But I felt kind of disconnected to it?? Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood when I watched it but I found myself wanting to care about the characters more than I actually did.
I did love how their theme song was a constant throughout the film, and that it changed to fit the theme. I liked the songs. I liked that they both got to follow their dreams in the end.
But I kind of just started comparing the movie to my favourite movies in that sort of genre; 'Three Summers' and 'Begin Again'. I could see how this movie could be what those movies are to me for someone who's into acting or jazz (as opposed to folky singer-songwriter stuff). But yeah, idk, I felt like Sebastian and Mia didn't have as much personality as say, Keevy or Roland or whatever any of the characters from Begin Again's names are (I've watched that movie SO MANY times and i forget their names every time). I don't know if thats a me problem or not though and i think i would probably have to do a rewatch to make sure.
also the ending made absolutely no sense to me. if they were each other's supposed great loves of their lives, why did she end up with someone else? why didn't they go back to each other? i kind of feel like they're trying to say she settled for someone else which is stupid (although he is adam fisher's actor from tsitp which was a nice surprise lol). why would she need to settle? or else she just fell for someone else in which case the ending is not quite as sad as people make it out to be. she got to have more than one great love, they got to help each other chase their dreams.
anyway, i have nothing actually against the movie, i just feel a bit of a disconnect and i don't really know why
