i have a BUNCH of harry potter and marauders fanfics that i love and i probably won't cover them all here but these are some must-reads that i enjoyed for their much more advanced take on jkr's universe. there is so much potential to explore within the characters and world that isn't really covered in the books so its really fun to see fic authors really flesh everything out.
The Journal of Dreadful Things series by Lilbeanz19
this series !!!! omg its so good!
basically, its from draco malfoy's perspective and before he starts hogwarts, his future self, just out from askaban, uses a time turner to go back and give himself a journal with all the details he can remember about his hogwarts years and tells draco he needs to be on the right side of the war. its such a beautiful story, really, as draco fights to unlearn his pureblood mentality. he rebels loudly and proudly and finds his true self in the process. as a marauders fan first and foremost, he reminds me SO MUCH of sirius black in this fic (and sirius himself says the same).
also the way lilbeanz writes the world is just so beautiful and rich. she carefully and thoughtfully fills in plot holes. i absolutely love the use of 'wix' used often instead of 'witch' or 'wizard' as a gender neutral alternative.
and there's AVPM references too, which is always a win in my book
currently, shes up to book 5 in the series, and it will probably be 7 books as its a retelling of their hogwarts years.
i could gush forever and ever about this series, its my latest obsession and its beautiful.
Oh God Not Again! by Sarah1281
the premise of this fic is that an adult harry potter falls into the same veil sirius fell into, and instead of dying, goes back to being 11 and starts hogwarts all over again. basically, it has a similar theme to the journal of dreadful things in that the main character just wants to fix things and for no one to die.
this one is definitely a bit on the lighter side though because harry just gives no shits and acts like an absolute lunatic. literally one of the first things he does on the hogwarts express is start a rumour that draco malfoy's father is actually severus snape.
i giggled like a maniac through most of this fic but its more than just funny. it gives neville more time in the spotlight, and draco and harry have a more civil relationship. it addresses the weirdness of harry being back in a child's body, yet knowing that he marries ginny eventually.
this fic also just has my favourite characterisation of harry. hes basically just james potter and daniel radcliffe combined
Of Leaves And Stars by irrationalmoony and LadyAmina
a marauders fic! this fic has a more modern take on the wizarding world, and starts off as a text fic.
remus and sirius meet through text and start to fall for each other, but also can't reveal that they're magic to each other yet. in this fic, remus never went to hogwarts because of his lycanthropy.
not only does this fic talk about how magic might affect wixes (such as sirius getting migraine-like symptoms after apparating), it also has really beautiful representations of transness and gender queerness. remus is trans, and sirius is genderfluid. their identities are integral parts of the fic, their triumphs and their struggles, and it makes the story so much deeper. throughout the fic, i keep longing to give sirius a magical pin that changes when their pronouns change.
this fic just feels so full of real love. its almost very intimate, and feels like watching two people fall in love in real time. its still updating and its slow-going but the authors have promised to finish it and i believe they will be true to their word.
